Permanent Zen Blog: What is a Natal Chart?
Each of us come into this world with a unique natal (birth) chart, which is based on the exact time, date, and place of our birth, and is completely specific to us. Your chart is essentially like a photograph of the heavens at the time you were born and serves as a cosmic map or navigational device for your journey on earth. Astrology offers a completely unique and profound perspective, revealing how the planets intersects with our lives from birth and throughout our journey.
The Birth chart shows how the planets are uniquely arranged against the backdrop of the 12 signs of the zodiac and the 12 areas of human experience that are called zodiac houses. It is encoded with your personality characteristics, life’s patterns, cycles, and soul’s intentions. It also shows the timing of your personal development, transformation, and growth.
The Natal Chart provides a holistic view of the personality, and it provides important lessons to be learned in this incarnation for all those who take into account previous lives, and the evolutionary path of the soul.
Here are the 4 most important parts of your natal chart that you need to know:
Sun Sign: Your dominant personality traits; your soul’s essence; who you’re destined to be.
Your sun sign is which constellation the sun was passing through when you were born. It is the essence of your soul and is undoubtedly the most dominant aspect of your chart. Sun transits happen approximately every month. That’s why we associate certain zodiac signs with different months.
Moon sign: Your emotional and intuitive nature.
Your moon sign rules the deeper part of your personality. It is an indicator of your subconscious tendencies, innate abilities, etc. It intensifies the traits seen within your sun sign. Moon transits occur approximately every two days.
People often confuse what distinguishes their moon sign from their Venus sign. While Venus can indicate family dynamics, love, beauty, and money, the moon’s energy is heavier, more profound, and is our psychological compass.
Ascendant sign: First impression; outward appearance; how other people view you.
Your ascendant sign is what sign was over the eastern horizon at the time of your birth. Your ascendant sign changes every few hours. It is likely why people are surprised to find out your zodiac sign. A more reserved Gemini or an extremely outgoing Pisces is likely due to a different ascendant. It’s often the side of you that surfaces in social situations or environments.
The planets
The one on the right is a natal chart, and it includes all the planets of the Solar System. These planets are connected by these blue and red lines that we call planetary aspects in astrology. The planets represent our psychological functions.
The planets shape their features in relation to the sign in which the planets is positioned. Our inner warrior, represented by Mars, would change its way of acting in relationship with the sign: Mars in Aries will have an impatient nature that drives them to go after want they want immediately, while a Mars in Gemini always needs a fresh change of pace just to keep energy levels up.
In addiction, we will have to consider the aspect that forms Mars within the other 10 elements in the chart, and if there it is connected by some of the blue or red lines (aspects) we talked about in the previous paragraph.
Mars squared Jupiter could indicated a person who is energetic and sexually attractive while a Mars in a bad aspect with the Moon could suggest problems into releasing emotions.
How long have these types of astrology charts been around?
Humans have tracked the movement of the heavens since civilization dawned. As far back as 6000 B.C. the Sumerians noted the journeys of planets and stars. Around 3300 B.C. the Babylonians (also known as the Chaldeans) began expanding upon what the Sumerians started, developing the first astrological system over thousands of years. They created the zodiac wheel that we use today (with planets and houses) around 700 B.C. The oldest known horoscope chart is believed to date to 409 B.C.
How to calculate our Natal Chart
To calculate your astrology birth chart, you’ll need your time, date and place of birth. Some people don’t know their birth time. If you can’t find it on your birth certificate, you can try contacting the Vital Records office in your state or area of birth. And if that still doesn’t work, make as close of an estimate as you can or enter 12:00 noon.
Without a birth time, you won’t be able to accurately learn your rising sign, or ascendant. Nor will you correctly know which houses the planets in your chart fall in. But there is still a LOT of data you can glean by entering your date and location of birth—so don’t let that stop you from checking out your astrology natal chart.
