PERMANENT ZEN BLOG: INTUITION VS EGO—HOW TO TELL WHICH INNER VOICE IS WHICH?

Intuition always comes from our heart or gut. It might be a form of wisdom from our higher self or maybe from the Universe itself. Your intuition is here to guide you both spiritually and emotionally through life.

Your intuition is constantly guiding you to back your higher self. That means you don’t have to worry or endlessly stress because you have a source of divine knowledge inside you at all times. Your Higher Self has the roadmap on how you can reach your greater purpose, and it's always giving you nudges through intuition to help make the right decisions.

Your ego’s main job is to protect you from any perceived risk...and from growth. Your ego doesn't understand or care that you're a spiritual being here on a journey of personal growth. It just wants homeostasis. It just wants you to stay the same, even if staying the same means you staying miserable.

Intuition isn't emotionally charged. It isn't designed to make you feel overly scared or overly excited. It simply feels like a light suggestion that bubbles up into your mind, saying "Hey Beautiful Soul, why not try this...".

Ego is super charged with emotion. Typically dripping with fear or excitement, the ego is the perspective-less reptilian part of your brain trying to run the show. It's motto is, "You're an animal, and you need to focus on surviving goddammit!"

Your intuition is consistent. It's gentle but steady in it's guidance. It never forces, it just guides.

The ego is all over the place. It constantly changes its mind, its tone and can show up as fear one day, and then anger or self doubt the next.

Your intuition is always there, whether you're ready for it or not. It doesn't mind if you don't listen to it. It knows that it's nothing personal.

Your ego on the other hand always needs to be fed. It always wants attention and needs your attention to stay alive. That is because you're not the friend of the ego, you are it's host and it lives to drain your energy.

Another tell-tale sign that the ego is in charge is a message of scarcity. The ego will always assume scarcity over abundance! Its got its own best interests in mind at all times, of course. But that means instead of trusting in abundance, it will panic and try to control or manipulate situations in order to get what it wants.  In contrast, your higher self understands the true abundant nature of the Universe! It won’t freak out and try to micromanage things because it’s able to surrender and trust, knowing scarcity is just an illusion.

Finally— the ego always assumes the world is an unsafe place and it will do anything to keep you safe! Protecting us and creating boundaries is important but the ego tends to go a little overboard and keep us paralyzed rather than taking action even on things we truly want to do! The ego creates a false sense of control, which can be difficult to let go of!  Our intuition always comes from a place of love and security. The focus will be on expressing yourself, not on gaining control of a situation.
